ABSTRACT

Introduction: Specific gravity is a fundamental physicochemical parameter used to compare the density of a substance with that of a reference standard. It is widely applied in pharmaceutical analysis, clinical diagnostics, material science, and traditional medicine systems for assessing purity, composition, and quality of substances. Materials and Methods: Specific gravity was determined using standard analytical techniques appropriate to the physical nature of the samples. Liquids were analyzed using pycnometers and hydrometers, while solids were evaluated by hydrostatic balance and displacement methods. All measurements were conducted under controlled temperature conditions to ensure accuracy and reproducibility. Results: The obtained specific gravity values were consistent with established reference standards. Minor variations were observed depending on temperature and sample composition. These variations were useful in identifying differences in concentration, formulation, and potential adulteration. The methods employed demonstrated reliability and precision for routine laboratory analysis. Discussion: Since the weight of Nirgundi Taila is less than that of water for the same volume, it indicates that the oil is lighter than water, which is a characteristic feature of most medicated oils. Specific gravity is a crucial parameter indicating the relative density of Taila preparations compared to water. The observed specific gravity of Nirgundi Taila was found to be within the acceptable range for medicated oils prepared using Tila Taila. Slight variations in specific gravity may be attributed to the extraction of phytoconstituents from Nirgundi leaves, duration of heating, and Sneha Siddhi stage achieved during preparation. The results confirm proper processing and absence of dilution or adulteration. Establishing such physicochemical parameters contributes to reproducibility, quality assurance, and acceptance of Ayurvedic formulations in contemporary pharmaceutical evaluation. Conclusion: The assessment of specific gravity of Nirgundi Taila provides a simple yet reliable physicochemical parameter for its standardization. The findings support the quality and consistency of the prepared Taila and can serve as a reference for future analytical and pharmacological studies.
