ABSTRACT
Floating microspheres is a novel drug delivery system used exclusively for gastroretentivepreparationsbased on a non – effervescent approach. Gastro-retentivefloating microspheres are low-density systemsthat have sufficient buoyancy to floatover gastric contents and remain in stomach for prolongedperiod. The drug isreleased slowly at desired rate resulting in increased gastric retention withreducedfluctuations in plasma drug concentration. suitable for the continuous or late releaseof oral formulations, thus controlled drug delivery system. Floating microspheresare, in a strict sense, spherical empty particles without a core. Floatingmicrospheres are especially gaining attention due to their wide applicability in thetargeting of drugs to the stomach. Floating microspheres improve patientcompliance by decreasing dosing frequency, better therapeutic effect of short halflifedrugs can be achieved. Enhanced absorption of drugs which solubilize only instomach. Floating microspheres are prepared by solvent diffusion and evaporationmethods to create the hollow inner core. Present review articles deals with differentaspect of floating microspheres.
